Issue #8 FASHION + SYSTEMS

Parsons’ BIAS: The Journal of Fashion Studies invites you to submit to its upcoming issue FASHION + SYSTEMS.

Fashion has been shaped by overarching social, political and economic systems since its inception. From production and consumption to institutional oppression, these seemingly invisible structures rule how we access, understand and create fashion. In this issue, we will explore how these various systems impact fashion, while also investigating how fashion itself disrupts or subverts these systems.

BIAS is accepting original pieces of writing and visual media. Content may include (but is not limited to) photography, illustration, video, painting, poetry, interviews, fiction, non-fiction and academic writing.

Some concepts and questions to consider:

• How does fashion perpetuate systems of oppression?

• How does the current fashion system silence marginalized communities?

• How do economic systems perpetuate elitism in fashion?

• How is style used as an extension of identity and presentation through activist groups?

• How can fashion be used as a tool for resistance and protest?

• When thinking about fashion institutions like brands, museums, and archives, who holds the power to write and preserve historical narratives?

Submissions along with a 150-word bio must be received by February 14, 2021 via e-mail at biasjournal@newschool.edu

All submissions must meet the following criteria:

• Maximum of 1000 words for written pieces

• Maximum of 10 images for photography or other visual media (300 dpi)

• Images rights must belong to the submitter or have reproduction permission
