“It has been said that the official clothing (opening ceremony uniform) of the ‘Hinomaru Color’ worn by the Japanese team at the opening ceremony of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics was designed by clothing designer Kensuke Ishizu. The description of ‘Ishizu Design’ is still posted on the websites of JOC (Japanese Olympic Committee) and public institutions. However, unlike that myth, there are many materials and testimonies that the actual design was by a clothing store named Mochizuki Yasuyuki, who had a store in Kanda, Tokyo.”

In this article, fashion historian Hisako Anjo details how Mr. Mochizuki designed the “memorable 1964 Olympics Red Blazer and Japanese Ivy Style.”
