This episode focuses on silk and a Qing era embroidered skirt from China, which Rachel Kay Shuttleworth, founder of the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, bought at Liberty department store. The skirt is exquisitely covered with motifs such as lotus flowers, pomegranates, butterflies and bats. This skirt, created in China and sold in London, speaks to the vast histories of interconnection between these two areas. Amber Butchart, host of the podcast, interviews Rachel Midgley, curator of the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, about the Chinese silks in the collection, which number around 400. She also speaks to design historian Dr. Sarah Cheang about Sinophilia, or how Chinese design has inspired European fashion for centuries, as well as her work with the Research Collective for Decoloniality and Fashion.
