Camilo Retana earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy at Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina. He is a Professor and Researcher at the School of Philosophy and the Ph.D. Program in Social and Cultural Studies at Universidad de Costa Rica. He has published a series of books, including Pornografía: la tiranía de la mirada (Pornography: The Tyranny of the Gaze) in 2008, Las artimañas de la moda (The Traps of Fashion) in 2015, and El cuerpo abierto (The Open Body) in 2018, which was awarded the Premio UNA-Palabra by Universidad Nacional. In 2020, he also wrote the essay Enseres: esbozos para una teoría del disfraz (Gear: Towards a Theory of Costume) and co-edited Locos por las series (Crazy About Series) with María Lourdes Cortés. Enseres won the Premio Nacional de Ensayo Aquileo J. Echeverría, which is the maximum literary award offered in Costa Rica. Dr. Retana is currently the Director of the Graduate Program in the Arts at Universidad de Costa Rica.
